Stay in touch – stay alive!
Recently the ABC News Australia had an article titled: Loneliness Can Be Lethal.
Here is the link: http://www.abc.net.au/news/stories/2010/07/29/2967353.htm
It reported on a study that highlights the importance of keeping in touch with other people.
As I have always maintained, social isolation is a terrible thing. But we can do something about that.
Even a frail, older person can manage to keep in touch with family and friends, by using technology.
Using the ‘good side’ of the Internet their own home computer, and maybe a webcam, they can talk to people every day, or every week, or every hour! Remember how great you felt the last time you chatted with someone you hadn’t spoken to in ages.
I’m sure those good feelings must someonehow be absorbed, or used by your body to lift your mood, and bring a feeling of well-being. It must translate to better health. And by doing this regularly, well that has got to be a good thing.
Here’s the link to the article again, if you care to take a look. http://www.abc.net.au/news/stories/2010/07/29/2967353.htm
I would love to know what you think – why not leave a comment in the Reply box below.

Lake Eyre 2010
LAKE EYRE REGATTA
Wow, this is definitely a rare event! The waters from the recent rains have reached Lake Eyre and some very keen boaters have seized the opportunity to celebrate and have a boat race, while the opportunity is there.
I have found some great photos on two websites on the Internet – the links are below:
There are photos displayed on these webpages. And there are various ways to look at the photos – depending on how long you want to spend looking and how much detail you want to see. This is another chance to notice those various options, see what the various buttons, numbers and symbols mean and do. For instance:
- When you point your mouse towards the photo, a large image is shown.
- If you click on the photo, then a large photo is displayed.
- When you click on Slide Show, it will display the photos one by one, and automatically shows you the next one after a few seconds. But, notice when you click on Slide Show, that it doesn’t actually start working until you click on the Play button (the right pointing arrow) at the bottom of the photo.
Play around and see what you enjoy. It’s a good way to use the Internet, and become familiar with various options that people give you.
Here are the links again: – enjoy!

WOW News – 20 May 2010: WOW News; LP to MP3; Exergames and Things You Didn’t Know
Brain training – does it work?
I was sent this link to a really interesting article on a UK website.
Apparently a study was done on the merits of brain training, and it was found that it didn’t actually improve a person’s cognitive abilities.
Here is a link to the article, so you can read it for yourself.
http://www.independent.co.uk/news/science/brain-training-games-do-not-improve-mental-skills-study-says-1949605.html
But personally, I think it must help improve the ‘agility’ of the mind. I know when I manage to do some brain training, I really do feel better for it. And I believe the old adage – “if you don’t use it, you lose it.”
And anyway, what I really think above all else – even if it doesn’t actually have a measurable improvement – doing these brain training games, getting on to the computer to look around, and figure things out, and find new ideas and meet new people – it’s all fun. It makes for a change in the day, and any spark of new interest has got to be good for us.
Let me know what you think – there’s a box down the bottom of the page, where you can leave me a reply. I’d love to know your thoughts.
And if you are interested in brain training, here is a link to the site that I use. I just love their games.
