WOW News – 21 May

Hi, and welcome to this week’s news from The Web on Wheels!

This is a shorter than usual newsletter this week, as I’m working on finishing the member’s ‘how-to’ videos, as well as developing some short ‘e-courses’ – more news on that later!

In this issue we’ll look at:

  • the AFL (and other sport’s) website;
  • a ‘Mind Reading’ puzzle; and
  • some walking humour.

<><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><>
Just a quick word about the content of this message.
Throughout this newsletter I have included various links to websites, and included some pictures. Sometimes those links don’t work.
It’s NOT you!
Sometimes your computer, or the system you’re using (eg. Hotmail, Outlook) decide to look after your security and block your ability to go straight to an outside website or to download pictures. Sometimes it’s simply that your computer is set to get only plain text messages. So no matter what you do, you won’t get the nice looking, easy-clicking tricks, your message will be just as it says – plain text without any of the fancy stuff.

If a link doesn’t work, try looking on your screen, usually toward the top of the email message and see if there’s some sort of message saying something about the link not being allowed. It might say,  ”to protect your privacy downloads have been prevented” or “links have been disabled” – or something similar. Often in the same area there’s a messsage saying ‘Add to Safe Senders List’, or ‘Mark as Safe’. Go ahead and click that, then future messages will come through perfectly for you. (Let me know if things don’t work as you expect and I’ll get it sorted for you.)

Until next week, please take good care of yourself.

AFL

Today we’re looking at sporting websites.

Our specific example will be the AFL, as there are so many people in Australia, particularly in Victoria who follow the AFL, which is the Australian Football League.

If you’re interested in football, or soccer, or basketball, or rugby, or cricket – or badminton – all these organisations will have their own websites. And your particular club will have its own website – even the local clubs now have websites. Even if they’re not fancy they still have a web presence, to give you and your family information such as where the club is located, and local news.

But back to our example.

To find the website of your choice, Open Internet Explorer (or whatever program you use to go to the Internet).

Then, simply type in the name of your organisation or club into the web address area. (the long white/grey space at the top)

For our example, we’ll type:     afl and then press enter, and up will come the AFL website.

Another example:   We type Swimming Australia into the web address area, then up comes their website.

Here’s what you do if you’re not sure of what the organisation or club name is.

I wanted to go to the website for American Badminton.

So I just typed American Badminton into the web address area.

Apparently there’s no website called American Badminton. So that automatically meant that I was shown Google’s Search Results, instead.

From there I could see that it’s
actually called North American Badminton League,
so I was able to click on that link
to get to their website.

You can try the same method for any group you’re interested in.
Type the name in the address field – you’ll either go straight to the website, or have a list of links to choose from.

So back to our original example website – the AFL.

If you don’t know what on earth Australian Football is, why not first click on one of the video links – there’s a link for matches, and you’ll have an idea of what the game’s about.

At the top of the page, there’s a row of emblems, one for each of the footy clubs. (we say “footy” in Australia … we’re very lazy with our speech Smile)

Click on any of those emblems, and you’ll go to that club’s own website. We’ll use my husband’s club, Carlton. (sorry to the Collingwood fans!)

Click on the links that are just under the team emblems to explore what’s available. You can see match results for any round so far in the season, there’s videos on different players, highlights of games from years ago, the fixture and events. There are also links to articles, tribunal news, and loads of videos.

And you’ll no doubt discover loads of information on the website of your sport of choice.

Mind Reader Puzzle

This week’s content … isn’t strictly to do with your wellbeing, but I couldn’t resist sending it.

It’s a puzzle, that I find amazing, and once you’ve completed it, if you wish you can enter your email address and you’ll be able to find out the explanation.

And that explanation, was enough mind exercise for me for the day – had to go and have a nice cup of tea afterwards! If you do decide to put in your email address to get the answer, you may receive further emails from Christopher. You can stop these messages anytime, by clicking on the unsubscribe button.

But if you’d rather not sign up but still want to know – let me know, and I’ll send you the answer.

Hope you have fun with the puzzle.

The puzzle is supported by Christopher Westra’s Royalties University. This is something I’m going to look at later … in my spare time … (or is that in my dreams ) http://wowviv1.royalnow.hop.clickbank.net

Walking

This week’s contribution is from June. Thanks June!!

The Importance of walking

Walking can add minutes to your life.
This enables you at 85 years old
to spend an additional 5 months in a nursing
home at £2,000 per month.

My grandpa started walking
five miles a day when he was 60.
Now he’s 97 years old
and we don’t know where he is.

I like long walks,
especially when they are taken
by people who annoy me.

The only reason I would take up walking
is so that I could hear heavy breathing again.

I have to walk early in the morning,
before my brain figures out what I’m doing..

I joined a health club last year,
spent about 250 quid.
Haven’t lost a pound.
Apparently you have to go there.

Every time I hear the dirty word ‘exercise’,
I wash my mouth out with chocolate.

I do have flabby thighs,
but fortunately my stomach covers them.

The advantage of exercising every day
is so when you die, they’ll say,
‘Well, she looks good doesn’t she.’

If you are going to try cross-country skiing,
start with a small country.

I know I got a lot of exercise
the last few years,……
just getting over the hill.

We all get heavier as we get older,
because there’s a lot more information in our heads.
That’s my story and I’m sticking to it.

AND
Every time I start thinking too much
about how I look,
I just find a Happy Hour
and by the time I leave,
I look just fine.

Bye for this week,
Smiles and best wishes
Viv
