WOW News – 2 April
Hi and welcome to this week’s news from The Web on Wheels!
Well it’s now April 2nd and it seems that the Conficker virus hasn’t hurt the world’s computers, well at least not yet. Click here to see an article on the washup from the April Fool’s Day virus. But even though nothing serious seems to have happened so far, we should all always make sure we keep our computer’s security up-to-date, and be careful with what we do online.
In this issue we’ll look at:
- The Taubmans Paint website;
- article: ‘Dehydration Headaches; and
- a light-hearted moment

Just a quick word about the content of this message.
Throughout this newsletter I have included various links to websites, and included some pictures. Sometimes those links don’t work.
It’s NOT you!
Sometimes your computer, or the system you’re using (eg. Hotmail, Outlook) decide to look after your security and block your ability to go straight to an outside website or to download pictures. Sometimes it’s simply that your computer is set to get only plain text messages. So no matter what you do, you won’t get the nice looking, easy-clicking tricks, your message will be just as it says – plain text without any of the fancy stuff.
If a link doesn’t work, try looking on your screen, usually toward the top of the email message and see if there’s some sort of message saying something about the link not being allowed. It might say, “Click here to download pictures” or “to protect your privacy downloads have been prevented” or “links have been disabled” – or something similar. Most of the time, it also gives you the option to click in that message area and give your computer permission to go ahead and allow the picture to come onto your computer, or allow you to get to the website.
(Let me know if things don’t work as you expect and I’ll get it sorted for you.)
Until next week, please take good care of yourself.

Site to See
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The site we’ll look at today is Taubmans TM Paints.
The website is: |
If you’re planning to redecorate, or even just wondering whether a fresh coat of paint will look good on a wall, they have several great ‘tools’ to use. This is a chance to use your computer for something a little different than just sending emails.
There’s something called ‘Roomscapes’ which lets you see – on your computer screen – how different paint colour combinations will look in ‘virtual rooms’. And they have an intriguing thing that supposedly tells you what ‘colour person’ you are. I’m not sure about that, but it has the most sumptuous photos, and it’s a bit of fun. They have a Paint Calculator so you can work out how much paint you’ll need, plus of course information about which paint of theirs you’ll need and what tools you might need.
Their Home Page www.taubmans.com.au displays the different sections; click on whichever one interests you.
In our little demo today, we’ll firstly look at what they call ‘Roomscapes‘. On the home page, click on the button that says EXPERIENCE 3D COLOUR NOW. This lets you play around with different colour combinations of paint in their ‘virtual’ rooms. This is the direct link:
There are three steps to using this tool.
- Themes (click the black down-arrow, scroll down and click on your choice of colour schemes)
- Room (click on the black down-arrow, scroll down and click a room to select it)
- Palette (click on one of the ten numbered lines in the Palette section). Each line gives a different combination of colours. As you click each line, the picture on the left will change to show you the different combinations.
|
See how the wall colour changes |
|
You can then print off a couple of selections and you might be inspired to brighten up the home, or decide you’re not going to be outlandish with a purple wall after all!
The other tool we’ll quickly look at is the fun ‘Colour Profiler’.
This lets you know which ‘colour’ person you are. There are 10 questions that you answer on screen. As they say on the site, there are no right or wrong answers, but this can give you some insight into the colours that you feel most comfortable about.
To use this tool, Click this link: then click on the Play Now button. Oh, and turn your speakers on to hear the music for question 7.
|
|
· Each question has a short explanation. Click on the OK button to go to the question. · Move your mouse over each of the dots and pause. You’ll see a picture, or text showing different options. · When you’ve looked at each selection, click on the dot of your choice to go to the next question. |
Dehydration Headaches
|
|
This week’s article is about drinking water.
It’s from the website: www.about.com |
We all know that we should be drinking water for good health. But for all our good intentions, it seems a difficult thing to do sometimes. I’ve been told that for every cup of tea we have, we should drink one cup of water, and for every cup of coffee we drink, we should drink two cups of water!! I certainly don’t do that. Recently my mother-in-law was unwell, and the doctor told her in no uncertain terms that one of the major causes of her problem was being dehydrated.
An article I came across on the internet also suggests that some headaches may be related to not drinking enough water. Here is the link to the whole article on the About.com website.
A couple of points about the website. There are two pages to the article, there’s a link at the bottom of the first page, click on the number 2 to go to the second page.
And although this website is a fantastic resource for information of all sorts, it has many ads. When you see Sponsored link, please realise that if you click that link, then you’ll go to a different website … which is fine if you do want to go there for more info about a topic, but you might need to come back to the article if you haven’t finished reading it.
Why is it So?
You may have seen some of these before, but hope you get a giggle anyway.
- Why is it that people say they “slept like a baby” when babies wake up every two hours?
- Why do we press harder on a remote control when we know the batteries are flat?
- Why do banks charge a fee on “insufficient funds” when they know there is not enough?
- Why does someone believe you when you say there are four billion stars, but check when you say the paint is wet?
- Why doesn’t Tarzan have a beard?
- Why does Superman stop bullets with his chest, but ducks when you throw a revolver at him?
- Whose idea was it to put an “S” in the word “lisp”?
- What is the speed of darkness?
- If the temperature is zero outside today and it’s going to be twice as cold tomorrow, how cold will it be?
- If it’s true that we are here to help others, what are the others doing here?
- Do married people live longer than single ones or does it only seem longer?
- Do you cry under water?
- Why do people pay to go up tall buildings and then put money in binoculars to look at things on the ground?
- Why do the Alphabet song and Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star have the same tune?
Go on, admit it …. you’re singing it, aren’t you??
Bye for this week,
Smiles and best wishes
Viv
